Subway Riders Get Double Charged by OMNY Scanners
The new OMNY scanners that the MTA has recently installed are giving riders some trouble by double charging their MetroCards. The contactless payment mechanism got its five millionth tap this week, a cause for celebration.
But some of these taps are due to the sensitivity of the scanner, which has robbed fares from OMNY enabled smartphones and credit cards charging some riders twice for the ride. The first charge occurs when the rider uses the MetroCard and the second charge when the mobile payment service passes the OMNY enabled turnstile.
The MTA is still figuring out the cause of the problem and is addressing the complaints.
