Subway Service Ran Smoother This Summer
By Y.M. Lowy
The MTA reported improved subway service over the summer, with trains running on schedule more often than in recent years. Weekday service in August reached its best performance for the month in a decade outside of the COVID-19 pandemic years.
Officials credited the improvement to new tools for tracking delays and a fleet of updated trains on the Staten Island Railway, which replaced cars that had been in use for decades.
The summer service didn’t run perfectly though. Torrential rain in July caused flooding that disrupted service on multiple lines, and power outages at the West 4th Street station led to partial shutdowns affecting several routes. Other heat-related issues also caused temporary service interruptions.
Despite these challenges, the MTA’s continued upgrades and investments are helping keep trains running more reliably.
