An abandoned industrial pier in Sunset Park is set for a major transformation into a public green space, marking a milestone for Brooklyn’s working waterfront.

City officials and community leaders gathered on August 12 to break ground on Pier 6 at the MADE Bush Terminal, a 5-acre site that will offer residents new waterfront access for the first time in decades. The project, led by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), is part of a $25 million investment to stabilize the deteriorating pier, preserve its natural habitat, and incorporate elements of its industrial past into a modern, resilient park.

Once complete in 2027, the pier will feature landscaped walking paths, preserved vegetation, and repurposed maritime artifacts such as bollards. The design was shaped through community input gathered from surveys, workshops, and public events. Officials also plan to introduce water-based recreational and educational activities along the MADE Bush Terminal waterfront.

“This project will deliver transformative public open space, connect more New Yorkers to the water, and strengthen the district as a center for jobs and opportunity,” said Deputy Mayor Adolfo Carrión Jr.

Pier 6 sits within the 200-acre Sunset Park District, which also includes the Brooklyn Army Terminal, the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, and the Brooklyn Wholesale Meat Market. The groundbreaking coincided with the release of NYCEDC’s first Sunset Park Update Report, outlining more than $2.3 billion in public and private investment in the area over the past year.

Recent milestones include the opening of MADE Building A — offering 170,000 square feet of industrial and community space — and the start of construction on one of the nation’s largest offshore wind port facilities at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal.

Local leaders hailed Pier 6 as a long-awaited step toward expanding green space in Sunset Park while ensuring the community benefits from new economic opportunities.

“Once completed, Pier 6 will increase community and green spaces and will bring to fruition a resilient waterfront area,” said Council Member Alexa Avilés.

State Senator Andrew Gounardes added, “This project offers so many different things to our community — new public space, connections to the waterfront, protections for wildlife, and a more vibrant hub where New Yorkers can access good jobs.”
