Tannersville Police Shoot Mother Bear that took up Residence in Town

The hamlet of Tannersville, New York, has become a growing summer vacation attraction for families from the Tri-State area. Black bear sightings have been a feature of life in Tannersville for as long as anyone can remember, but the frequency of the sightings and the seeming fearlessness of the bears this summer has left some uneasy.

According to authorities, there are about 50 active black bears in the woods around Tannersville alone—but it seems that they have been coming into town more frequently. Video circulated last week of a mother and cubs that went into a home on Shabbos and took their time eating the cholent… it is really unnerving how comfortable they have become here,” said one Tannersville vacationer.

After the mother tried one too many times to pry her way into a food warehouse, the proprietor had had enough, and called police.

The police arrived and got one shot to the shoulder, and then another shot to the head, and waited until it died. The environmental police arrived and took the carcass away… That left the two cubs who crawled into the tree. They came back the following morning, coaxed them into a van, and let them loose in the nearby woods.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation when humans and bears come into such close contact, said one source. But ultimately, the safety of our workers and our customers was at stake, and the police had to make this call.”
