Today in History: Apple, the Multibillion Dollar Company, was Founded
The famous Apple Co. of today was founded on April 1, 1976, by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, as a business partnership. The company's first product was the Apple I, a computer designed and hand-built entirely by Wozniak.
Before it became one of the wealthiest companies in the world, Apple Inc. was a tiny start-up in Los Altos, California. Co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, both college dropouts, wanted to develop the world's first user-friendly personal computer.
They each sold some of their most valuable possessions to finance this project.
Allegedly, Steve Jobs came up with the company’s name while he was on one of his “fruitarian diets “and he thought the name sounded “fun, spirited and not intimidating.”
Although the Apple I computer was a massive success, the company’s most popular item, the iPhone, was introduced much later, in 2007.
