Today in History: The Opter Rav Wishes “L’chaim” on New Years Eve

By Toby Friedman

The Opter Rav, a talmud of R’ Elimelech from Lizensk, used to wish his disciples “l’chaim” on New Year’s Eve.

When asked why he acknowledges a non-Jewish holiday he responded by explaining that it is a happy time for klal yisroel because when Hashem sees the difference between how we celebrate our Rosh Hashanah and how the gentiles celebrate theirs it brings blessings upon our nation.
