Tracking Technology Comes to Three NY Bridges

Tracking Technology Comes to Three NY Bridges

By Idy Perl

New vehicular tracking is coming to three bridges that connect New York and New Jersey.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that new tracking technology has been installed on the Goethals Bridge and is coming to the Bayonne Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing by the end of 2026. The technology will give police the ability to track license plates as they cross over to the neighboring state and will help mitigate crime.

So far on the Goethals Bridge that connects Staten Island to New Jersey, they’re already seeing it work. Car thefts in Staten Island were at an all time high in 2022, but with the tracking technology it’s been dropping drastically.

"It's given us a tool to track criminal enterprises coming into Staten Island," said NYPD Staten Island Borough Assistant Chief Joseph Gulotta.
