TRAFFIC ALERT: Annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Honors 9/11 Heroes in NYC This Sunday

By Y.M. Lowy

The 24th annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk will take place in New York City this Sunday, September 28, honoring the 343 FDNY firefighters, law enforcement officers, and thousands of civilians lost on September 11, 2001, as well as those still affected by 9/11-related illnesses and the more than 7,000 service members who died in the Global War on Terror.

The run retraces the heroic final steps of FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller, who on 9/11 ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel carrying his 60-pound firefighting gear to help save lives at the Twin Towers. Runners and walkers will follow the same route from Brooklyn to Manhattan that Siller took.

To accommodate the event, the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and several streets in Brooklyn and Manhattan will be closed for the course.
