Update Tuesday 11:32am: Victim of U-Haul Rampage Succumbs to Injuries

The 44-year-old man who was in critical condition after being mowed down during yesterday's U-Haul driver rampage died of severe head injuries.

The victim was riding an e-bike when he was hit at 10:48 a.m. at Bay Ridge Parkway and Fifth Avenue. The force of the impact threw the cyclist onto the sidewalk.

Seven others were wounded as the U-Haul tore through Brooklyn, causing 48 minutes of terror from 10:17 a.m. and 11:05 a.m. They are all in stable condition.

The U-Haul's driver was identified as Weng Sor, who, according to a statement delivered by his son, has a long history of mental illness and who spent time in prison for stabbing two people.

Update: 1:56

A total of eight patients have been admitted to the hospital after what  Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell describes in a press conference as a "violent ramage through Brooklyn.  Two people are listed in critical condition, two in serious, and four others are being treated for minor injuries, one of whom is a police officer who was acting in the line of duty during the incident.

Update: 12:33

Four patients have been admitted to the hospital. Police have reported that one man in his thirties, who the driver used his truck to ram into at 4th Avenue, was taken to Lutheran Hospital in critical condition. Three moped drivers who suffered minor injuries near 5th Avenure are in stable condition.

Although it is not clear if the events are related, it has been noted that the horrendous actions of the driver coincide with the start of the death penalty phase in Sayfulllo Saipov's trial. Saipov is an  Islamic extremist who murdered eight people in 2017 when he mowed them down with a truck.

The driver of the truck, who was taken into custody, is a 62-year-old with no prior arrests.

Commuters should expect heavy traffic when leaving the area via the Holland Tunnel.

Original Report:

An out-of-control truck hit a biker and an unknown number of pedestrians at three locations near 5th Avenue and Bay Ridge Parkway around 11 a.m.

The driver then fled north on the Gowanus Expressway. After he exited Hamilton Avenue, he was surrounded by police at Columbia Street and taken in for questioning.

The bomb squad has been called in to check out the truck.
