Underground Tank Finished as Part of Gowanus Canal Sewage Project

By Y.M. Lowy
The city has made significant progress in its project to keep sewage out of the Gowanus Canal.
The Department of Environmental Protection recently finished digging the Red Hook tank, a large underground structure designed to hold up to 8 million gallons of sewage and rainwater during storms, rather than allowing it to flow directly into the canal. This tank is one of two being built near the canal to prevent overflow from entering the water during heavy rainfall.
Once completed, both tanks will be covered and hidden to blend into the waterfront. The entire project is expected to be finished by 2029.
