Your Hand Sanitizers May be doing More Harm Than Good

The Food and Drug Administration has compiled a list of nearly 150 hand sanitizer products rendering deadly toxins.

The agency found a new substance known as 1-propanol used in some sanitizers. When ingested, this ingredient can depress the central nervous system and cause death.

“1-propanol... is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizer products marketed in the United States and can be toxic and life-threatening when ingested,” the FDA said.

Skin or eye exposure can cause irritation and even allergic reactions, according to the FDA.

The organization is trying to warn consumers and healthcare professionals, they even specifically called out a manufacturer by the name of Harmonic Nature S de RL de MI in Mexico.

Many products also tested positive for containing ethanol and methanol, which can be toxic when ingested or absorbed through the skin.
