Askanim Meet With New York State Police To Discuss Safety

A group of askanim met this week with members of the New York State Police to strengthen communication and discuss several issues that affect residents, especially in the winter months.

The meeting introduced the community to a new state police matron, and it brought together a wide mix of law enforcement, including state troopers, sheriffs, border patrol and forest rangers. The goal was to reinforce the understanding between the askanim and the police force of who to reach when help is needed, whether it involves a stranded family on a snowy road or assistance for people in local prisons who require kosher food or access to tefillin.

Much of the conversation focused on winter road safety. When driving upstate, once you get toward the Lake George area, snow is common almost every day in the winter. They reiterated the importance of wearing seatbelts, correct car seat use and paying attention to the conditions at night when people travel home from weddings or other late simchos.

Drivers need to stop and rest if they feel tired during winter travel, since snowy conditions and long drives can exhaust a person faster. In the event of a crash, officers explained that calling 911 right away is crucial because they immediately use GPS to locate you. After calling 911, you can then reach out to any organization like Hatzolah or Chaveirim if you need.

State Police also shared that troopers pass through every area at least once every fifteen minutes during winter hours to look out for stranded vehicles or anyone who may need help.
