Trains Running Dirty as MTA Repairs Subway Car Washers
By Y.M. Lowy
Train riders may notice the outside of subway cars have been looking especially dirty.
F trains are among several subway lines currently running with grimy exteriors as the MTA repairs car washers at two of its train yards. The E, F, L, M and R lines are all affected.
The MTA says the repairs are part of a $73 million project to fix the car washers at Jamaica Yard and Canarsie Yard. Jamaica Yard handles trains from several subway lines, including the F, while Canarsie Yard services the L line.
The Jamaica Yard car washer repairs are not expected to be completed until 2028. The Canarsie Yard washer, which has been out of service since last year, is also undergoing repairs and is expected to be completed next year.
The MTA says some subway cars are being moved to alternate wash locations when possible, but with the work ongoing, riders can expect to see more dirt and grime on the outside of some trains.
