BDE: Reb Kalman Mordechai Kahane, z”l

We are saddened to inform the community of the petira of Reb Kalman Mordechai Kahane, z”l, who was 65 years old.

Mr. Kahane, who was born in Los Angeles in 1956, was the son of HaRav Tzvi Kahane, zt”l, who was the Spinka Rebbe of Los Angeles and a talmid of the Chazon Ish and Rebbetzin Sarah Liba, a”h, who came from a family of prominent Gerrer chassidim.

Reb Kalman was married to Mrs. Chaya Blum, a beloved teacher at Tomer Devorah High School, and who is the daughter of Reb Leibel Blum, z”l.

After learning in kollel for several years, Mr. Kalman kept learning, but also took a course in computer programming so he was able to get a position at the Federal Reserve Bank.

While many report that his demeanor at work was an example of a kiddush Hashem, and that his workmates looked up to him not only for his brilliance, but also for his integrity, a neighbor of Mr. Kahane’s also admired him for his middos, humility, and kindness.

Mr. Kahane was a “very wonderful person with a lot of anivus,” said Menachem Iskowitz, who lived in the building with Mr. Kahane, who served as a board member of the building. “He always had a smile on his face, and he had a wonderful, wonderful family.

“I always saw his kids coming and going in and out of his house. They come and go for meals, Shabbos. He raised a wonderful family.

“He was a role model: for his walk, his coming, his going, his smile, his way, how he raised his family. You saw him, and you knew that he didn’t walk around with his head up. He gave people inspiration for how to live in the world.”

Mr. Kahane’s son-in-law, Rabbi Menachem Garfinkel is the head of the Yagdel Torah, Gerrer Cheder of Boro Park, and the askan of the Gerrer Kehilla.

Mr. Kanane’s levaya will take place at 6:45pm by the Gerrer Shteibel at 19th Avenue and 50th Street, and his kvura will be in Yerushaylim.

  Yehi Zichro Boruch.
