Board of Elections Prepares for Primary Day Heat Wave
By Y.M. Lowy
As Primary Voting Day approaches next Tuesday, the New York City Board of Elections is gearing up for the extreme heat forecasted. The Board is working to protect both voters and the more than 35,000 poll workers staffing 1,213 locations across the five boroughs.
Poll workers, who often serve for up to 17 hours, will be on the front lines of the heat. The Board is focusing on sites without air conditioning by deploying fans, supplying water, and collaborating with emergency teams to ensure the power remains operational.
“While voters may only be inside for a few minutes, this is a full-day challenge for our workers,” said Vincent Ignizio, Deputy Executive Director. “We’re treating this with the urgency it demands.”
Voters are encouraged to consider early voting to avoid the worst of the heat.
