Boro Park’s Assembly District to Expand Under New Proposed Redistricting Maps

Boro Park’s Assembly District to Expand Under New Proposed Redistricting Maps

Assembly District 48, which encompasses most of Boro Park and parts of Midwood, is set to expand under new redistricting maps released by the New York Legislature after the Independent Commission couldn’t come up with a bipartisan map and instead handed over the process to the New York Legislature.

The 48th District, which is represented by Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein since 2019, will now expand to include even more of Boro Park, most notably from 42nd Street till 39th Street between 16th Avenue and Ft Hamilton Parkway, which until now was part of the 44th Assembly District, represented by Assemblyman Bobby Carrol.

The proposed new district will also include parts of the side streets between Ocean Parkway and 47th Street, including 18th Avenue, Webster, Lawrence, Parkville, and Foster Avenues.

On the opposite side, the new proposed district will be cut off at 61st Street, while until now it went till 65th Street on some Avenues.

“Someone stole me from [Bobby Carrol] and dumped me into [Simcha Eichenstein’s] district overnight,” quipped Yochonon Donn, an editor at Mishpacaha and Yated.

Lawmakers will need to vote for the new maps, and the legislature is likely to approve it as soon as this week. The new districts will go into effect for the new legislative term starting January 2023 and remain in effect until after the next census count in 2030.
