A Bronx man has been sentenced to four to 12 years in prison for causing a deadly 2021 crash in Sunset Park that claimed the life of 42-year-old James Lopez.

According to Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, the defendant, 28-year-old Elvis Nolasco, sped through multiple red lights while fleeing police before T-boning Lopez’s vehicle on 60th Street. Lopez, who was lawfully driving through the intersection, was taken to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn, where he later died.

Nolasco attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended while hiding under a parked car. Investigators later discovered he was driving with a suspended license. He pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in July before being sentenced by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Kim Petersen.

District Attorney Gonzalez stated, “By refusing to stop for police and speeding through one red light after another, this defendant caused a devastating crash that stole the life of an innocent man. Today’s sentence holds him accountable for that tragic loss.”
