Brooklyn Army Terminal Poised for Big Solar Carport Project as NYC Opens Bidding

By BoroPark24 Staff

A major solar project may soon be coming to the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT) in Sunset Park - a busy Brooklyn hub right in our backyard.

NYCEDC (the City’s economic development agency) has officially released a new RFP (Request for Proposals) looking for a solar developer to build carport-style solar panels over the BAT West Lot. The selected developer would handle the project from start to finish - designing, financing, installing, and operating the solar system long-term, including repairs and maintenance. NYCEDC also notes the project could eventually be decommissioned down the line, depending on the City’s decision.

Developers are also allowed to propose an optional battery storage system (BESS) at other areas within the Brooklyn Army Terminal - which could expand the scope even further.

NYCEDC says this is part of the City’s broader push to reduce emissions and move closer to net-zero goals, and proposals will be evaluated based on experience, technical plans, construction approach, financials, operations and maintenance planning, and required M/WBE participation.

An optional site visit is scheduled for Monday, February 2, 2026 at 10:00 AM at 140 58th Street in Brooklyn. Questions are due by Friday, February 6, 2026 at 5:00 PM, and proposals must be submitted by Tuesday, February 24, 2026 at 4:00 PM.

Further details are outlined in NYCEDC’s full RFP documents.
