Brooklyn’s First 2026 Baby Born at Maimonides; Nurse Strike Possible Amid Contract Talks

Brooklyn’s first newborn of 2026 arrived in the early hours of New Year’s Day at Maimonides Medical Center - a moment of joy that unfolded as the hospital simultaneously navigates a high-profile labor dispute with its nursing staff.

Noah Joseph Lewis, weighing 7 pounds and 5 ounces, was born at 2:22 a.m. on January 1, 2026, at Maimonides Medical Center. His parents, Chelsea Modeste Lewis and Devin Lewis, residents of Flatbush, welcomed the newborn just hours after the new year began.

The news comes as Maimonides faces the possibility of a nurse strike, following stalled contract negotiations. In a statement released by the hospital, Maimonides emphasized the essential role nurses play in patient care while expressing hope that a strike can be avoided.

“Our nurses are critical to our success at Maimonides,” the hospital said. “We remain hopeful that we can avoid a strike and negotiate a fair contract that rewards nurses for their important work while recognizing the increasingly difficult financial challenges that hospitals face.”

Hospital officials have not yet announced whether an agreement with nurses is imminent, but negotiations are ongoing as the community closely watches developments.
