City Eyes Marine Terminal for 8,000 New Homes, Parks, and Transit Upgrades
By Y.M. Lowy
New York City needs more housing, and with limited help from the federal government, the city is exploring new ideas. One option is the underused Brooklyn Marine Terminal.
The terminal covers 122 acres along the waterfront. The city’s Economic Development Corporation is now looking into what can be done with the space.
Plans being considered include rebuilding the old piers, shifting some freight traffic from streets to the water, and adding up to 8,000 homes. More than a third would be permanently affordable.
There may also be new parks along the water, better transit connections, and space for shops and other businesses.
