City Officials Respond Amid Israeli Attacks on Iran; Additional Security by Shuls

Israel launched an unprecedented attack on Iranian territory overnight, targeting senior military officials, nuclear scientists, and strategic facilities linked to Iran’s nuclear development.
In retaliation, Iran fired more than 100 drones toward Israel. Israeli airspace was swiftly shut down, and dozens of international flights were diverted. Many travelers, including several groups from New York, found themselves stranded in European cities such as Rome, with no clear return route before Shabbos.
Among those affected are the Gur Rebbe, who is currently on a visit to the United States, and Reb Moshe Hillel Hirsh, Rosh Yeshiva of Slabodka, both with no confirmed plans for returning to Eretz Yisroel due to the uncertain air travel situation.
New York officials quickly responded to the escalation. Mayor Eric Adams issued the following statement. “I have been briefed on the unfolding situation in Israel and Iran, and the NYPD’s Counterterrorism Unit is closely monitoring the situation. Out of an abundance of caution, we are increasing security at houses of worship and at Israeli diplomatic sites.”
The NYPD also shared this message on X, “The NYPD is tracking the situation in the Middle East. Out of an abundance of caution, we’re deploying additional resources to Jewish, Israeli & other sites throughout NYC. We’re coordinating with our federal partners & we’ll continue to monitor for any potential impact to NYC.”
Governor Hochul echoed the concern with a post on X. “New York is closely monitoring tonight’s actions from Israel and Iran. There are no credible threats to New York at this time. As a precaution, we have increased security for sensitive locations and stepped up cybersecurity protections.”
