City Ramps Up Campaign After Fatal Subway Surfing Incident
By Idy Perl
The city is ramping up its campaign against subway surfing after an 11-year-old child died in a subway surfing incident on Monday morning.
Witnesses near the Fourth Avenue - Ninth Street station said that they saw the young boy fall from the top of a moving subway car. By the time the police arrived on the scene he was pronounced dead. This is the sixth subway surfing death reported since 2023.
In an effort to discourage the trend, the NYPD released a video earlier this month showing the drone technology they use to monitor and apprehend subway surfers. The MTA has also been targeting and removing subway surfing related content on social media.
