Coastal Water Cleanup Efforts Result in Dolphins Spotted Near Brooklyn

New York City officials claim that the unusual and much-heralded dolphin sighting near Greenpoint in the water between Brooklyn and Manhattan is a sign the previously polluted waters are clean enough to attract the 170-pound mammals.
"This is great news,” the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation tweeted. “—it shows that the decades-long effort to restore the river as a healthy habitat is working. We believe these dolphins naturally found their way to the river in search of fish."
The two common dolphins were spotted on Wednesday in Whale Creek, adjacent to Newtown Creek and the Newtown Creek Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility, near Greenpoint.
A video of the pair was taken near the Grand Street bridge.
