Coney Island’s Famous Boardwalk Set for $1 Billion Redesign

By Y.M. Lowy

Boro Parkers know the Coney Island Boardwalk as a classic summer outing spot, a place for strolls and ocean views. Now, the iconic 2.4-mile stretch in Coney Island is getting fully rebuilt. The city has secured $1 billion to completely reconstruct the nearly century-old boardwalk, from the support piles all the way to the top decking.

According to the New York City Parks Department, the project will replace the boardwalk’s support system, deck, and utilities, while also upgrading access points and several nearby Parks Department buildings, a long-awaited upgrade after years of storm damage and patchwork fixes.

The funding was secured by Mayor Eric Adams and Council Member Justin Brannan. Images from the presentation show a modernized boardwalk about 80 feet wide along most of its length, stretching from West 37th Street to Brighton 15th Street.

Construction is expected to take several years, with funding in place through 2032.

The Riegelmann Boardwalk, officially a scenic landmark since 2018, recently passed its 100th anniversary. It is one of Brooklyn’s most visited public spaces, attracting millions each year.

A formal announcement on the development plans is expected on Friday.

“This plan makes smart, forward-looking investments in the capital and infrastructure projects that will build our future,” Adams said. “We do not have time to wait to deliver the real relief New York City needs.”
