Crackdown Hits Boro Park: Groceries Face Heavy Fines Over Plastic Bags

By BoroPark24 Staff

Over the past few weeks, many grocery stores across Boro Park have been hit with fines for distributing plastic bags, a regulation that city agencies have now begun strictly enforcing. According to several store owners, inspectors issued separate fines for each cash register, resulting in significant penalties for some establishments.

According to the law store owners are only allowed to have reusable bags and are required to charge customers for it. Furthermore, produce bags are only allowed at the produce and meat department. Not next to the snacks and yogurts.

One grocery owner told BoroPark24 that the hearings and final fine amounts have not yet been confirmed, but the burden is already being felt.

“This is a new reality,” he said. “We received many fines at once, and we simply cannot keep absorbing these costs.”

Another store owner explained that the eco-friendly bags required by law cost them more than 15 cents per bag. With hundreds of customers per day, that expense adds up quickly.

“People should understand why groceries may start charging more for bags,” he said. “We already paid the price with these fines. We can’t keep up if customers expect free plastic bags.”

Grocers are urging residents to bring reusable bags to avoid extra charges and help stores stay compliant. “Reuse your bags so you won’t get charged all the time,” the owner added, hoping that cooperation from customers will ease the burden of the new regulations.
