Delayed Bath Beach Pedestrian Bridge Frustrates Boro Parkers
The long-delayed reconstruction of the 17th Avenue pedestrian bridge in Bath Beach has left many Boro Park residents frustrated, as the vital overpass - once a direct link across the Belt Parkway to the Gravesend Bay promenade - remains unfinished.
The bridge, a heavily used pathway for Boro Parkers heading down 17th Avenue to enjoy the waterfront, was closed in 2021 and demolished in 2022 with promises of a quick rebuild. Originally slated to reopen in 2023, the project has instead dragged on, forcing residents to walk an additional 20–30 minutes to reach the bay.
City officials blame the delays on design changes, steel fabrication issues, and pandemic setbacks, with DOT now projecting completion next year. Locals, however, remain doubtful, pointing out that the massive Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge was built in less time than this small pedestrian span has been stalled.
