DOB Requires Gas Pipe Inspections of Boro Park's Buildings: starting Jan. 1

Starting on Jan. 1, 2023, most Boro Park building owners must arrange to have all of their units’ gas piping systems inspected, Ken Lazar, a representative from the city’s Department of Buildings’ (DOB) Office of Community Engagement and Programming told Community Board 12, last night at its monthly meeting.

Building owners in CB 12 will have until Dec. 31, 2023, to complete the inspections of their buildings’ gas piping systems, which according to city law, must be inspected every four years.

To inspect their buildings’ gas piping systems, building owners may hire licensed master plumbers or qualified plumbers, “who work under the direct and continuing supervision of licensed master plumbers,” Lazar said. 

Only one, and two-family homes, which NYC classifies as R3 occupancy groups, are exempted from the mandatory gas piping inspections next year. 

The DOB sets an annually rotating schedule in which the building owners in three to six community districts citywide must undergo gas piping inspections every four years to ensure residents’ safety.
