DOT Commissioner Advocating for More Red Light Cameras

DOT Commissioner Advocating for More Red Light Cameras

By Idy Perl

NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez is heading to Albany today to advocate for legislature to renew and expand NYC’s red-light camera program.

Last year, 29 people in NYC were killed due to vehicles running red lights at locations without a red-light camera, while red light running decreased 73% at intersections with cameras.

State law only allows cameras at 1% of NYC’s 13,700 intersections, which Commissioner Rodriguez is trying to change to at least 10%. The Commissioner is also advocating for the DMV to suspend the vehicle registration of offenders who receive 5 or more red light camera violations within a 12-month period.

Without action from Albany the entire program is at risk of ending this year.
