DSNY First Deputy Commissioner Javier Lojan Retires After 27 Years of Service

Yisroel R.

The New York City Department of Sanitation marked the retirement of First Deputy Commissioner Javier Lojan, bringing to a close a nearly 27-year career with the agency.

Lojan began his career in 1999 as a sanitation worker at the Manhattan 10 garage, the same location where he signed in and out for the final time. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become First Deputy Commissioner.

Reflecting on his time with the department, Lojan said the job became more than just work, describing it as an essential service that New Yorkers rely on every day. He pointed to major moments such as the cleanup efforts following September 11, Superstorm Sandy, and major snowstorms as examples of the department’s impact.

He said he leaves with pride and gratitude for what was accomplished during his time, adding that being part of sanitation becomes a lasting part of a person’s identity.

The department wished Lojan well as he moves on from his role after decades of dedication and service.
