Elevators Could Finally Come to Smith–9th Street Station Near Boro Park

By Y.M. Lowy

Smith–9th Street is the tallest subway station in the city. It’s nearly 90 feet above ground, and right now riders have to climb a lot of stairs and take an escalator just to reach the platform.

That’s about to change. The MTA’s new capital plan for 2025 to 2029 includes adding elevators to over 60 stations, and Smith–9th Street is on the list.

For parents pushing strollers and people who use wheelchairs, this will be a big relief.

Smith–9th Street is just outside Boro Park and is a familiar sight for many Boro Parkers traveling along the Gowanus Expressway toward the BQE or Battery Tunnel, so this update will help a lot of Brooklyn riders get around more easily. The MTA hasn’t said when construction will start yet.
