FDNY Deploys Thawing Apparatus to Keep Fire Hydrants Operational During Extreme Cold
By Yisroel R.
As extended freezing temperatures continue across New York City, the FDNY is deploying its thawing apparatus to prevent fire hydrants from freezing and to make sure water is available during emergencies.
Firefighter Maggio explained that the thawing apparatus is a specialized FDNY truck that heats water to help melt ice inside hydrants during extreme cold. Each borough has one of these trucks, which are deployed when the city experiences three consecutive days of below-freezing temperatures. Crews also respond to major fires where frozen hydrants could slow access to water.
When the apparatus arrives at a hydrant, firefighters remove the cap and check for ice inside. Heated water is then used to loosen and melt any ice. Firefighters reopen the hydrant to confirm that water is flowing properly, and once it is confirmed to be working, they drain any remaining water from the hydrant barrel to help prevent it from freezing again.
Frozen hydrants can cause delays on the fire ground during severe cold. Firefighters also salt the area around the hydrant to reduce ice buildup and keep it accessible for emergency use.
