Fleet Week Kicks Off At New York City Harbor

By Idy Perl

More than a dozen ships entered the New York Harbor, passing our local Verrazano Bridge, this morning to kick off Fleet Week with a celebratory Parade of Ships.

Fleet Week is a tradition of the United States Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, in which active military ships dock in major cities for a week, allowing the crew to enter the city and explore attractions for a few days. This year marks the 36th year of this annual event.

"Fleet Week is about celebrating those who serve and recognizing the unyielding strength of our Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard team," said Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Rear Adm. Wesley McCall in a statement. "As we come together to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice during their service, we are reminded of the diverse and inclusive fighting force that is currently serving to protect national security and preserve our way of life."
