Frosty Weather Causes Nearly 8,000 Flights Cancelations Around US

Nearly 8,000 flights were canceled or delayed across the United States on Wednesday as a winter storm blanketed much of the north with snow and sleet.

The storm, which is slowly making its way up the corridor from Washington to New England, has prompted major airlines such as Southwest and Delta to issue weather waivers to travelers. Other airlines, including United, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, were reporting fewer cancellations but were still facing mounting delays, according to FlightAware.

The wave of cancellations began in the morning, with Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport canceling 189 flights, or about half its flights, before 10 a.m. Another 123 flights were scratched at Denver International Airport and 117 at Detroit Metro Airport.

The weather pattern began in the Pacific Northwest region, gaining intensity as it moved over the western mountain states toward the Midwest and Great Lakes regions. About 75 million people were affected.
