Gas Leak Prompts Evacuations on 18th Avenue
By Yisroel R.
Firefighters responded around 10:50 p.m. last night to reports of a strong gas smell near 18th Avenue and 74th Street.
Crews located a cracked gas line, which led to the evacuation of 27 residents from four nearby buildings as a safety precaution. Hazmat units, the Red Cross, and the Office of Emergency Management were requested to assist at the scene.
National Grid shut gas service to three buildings while repair work was underway. No injuries were reported.
The incident lasted more than three hours, and residents were later allowed to return to their homes once the area was declared safe.
