Gov. Hochul Says She will Stand by Yeshivas at Brunch in Crown Heights

After praising the ways in which yeshiva education “honors the traditions steeped in the Jewish community,” on Sunday, Gov. Kathy Hochul pledged to “stand by the community and the yeshivas.”

As the guest speaker at the annual Crown Height Jewish Community Council (CHJCC) brunch on Sunday, Gov. Hochul also pledged to provide yeshivas with security grants and funding for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, collive reported.

Yeshiva education transmits and upholds Jewish beliefs by “honoring the traditions steeped in this community,” Gov. Hochul said.

With many members of Crown Height’s ethnically diverse community in attendance, Gov. Hochul also praised the CHJCC’s continued productive collaborations with its African-American and Caribbean neighbors.

While now working together in positive and peaceful relationships. Gov. Hochul sadly remembered that “30 years ago, our nation had a different perception of what it was like in Crown Heights,” referring to the destructive riots of 1991.

Now, the community, the governor said, “has come together for a common purpose: to lift all people up.”

NY Attorney General Letitia James, who represented parts of Crown Heights’ 35th District in the City Council from 2004 to 2013, remembered the “peace in the community during those 10 years because of the camaraderie because of events like this, where we brought individuals together to talk about our differences, but to talk about our humanity and our similarities.”

After sadly speaking of the funerals she attended last week after 10 who were grocery shopping in Buffalo were ruthlessly murdered by a white-supremacist and of the 19 innocents who were horrifically killed last week in Ulvade, Texas, James said, amidst a thunderous standing ovation, “Let us pray that our nation can come together. That love will conquer hate.”
