Hochul Bans Guns in Shuls and Other Soft Targets

Hochul Bans Guns in Shuls and Other Soft Targets

By M. C. Millman

In response to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning the State's century-old concealed carry law, a new anti-gun bill was signed by the governor and passed into law on Friday, July 1, banning concealed carry weapons in sensitive locations.

Locations include public transit; houses of worship; schools/daycares;  parks; businesses serving alcohol; hospitals; sports/entertainment venues; government buildings, homeless shelters;  poll sites; and Times Square. Guns will also be outlawed in all businesses and on private property unless the owner expressly grants permission for firearms. Businesses will have to post a sign stating armed patrons are welcome.

The new gun legislation will not only limit where people can carry firearms but will also place restrictions on who can get a permit.

It requires that applicants undergo 15 hours of in-person training at a firing range;  an in-person interview; and a review of social media accounts.

Applicants will have to show they have "the essential character, temperament, and judgment necessary to be entrusted with a weapon and to use it only in a manner that does not endanger oneself and others." Licenses will need to be renewed after three years. The bill, set to take effect September 1, also outlaws the sale of body armor.

Regarding concerns being raised about the safety of shuls, Boropark24 spoke with Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein about shul security guards. Eichenstein said he fought for an exemption, and the final bill now has an exemption for shul security guards.

Not everyone is pleased with the governor's latest efforts.

"The anti-2A gun legislation passed today by Democrats in Albany & signed by Kathy Hochul will make New York LESS safe. The threat isn't the law-abiding New Yorker who wants to safely and securely carry a firearm solely for self-defense. Go after the criminals instead!" Congressman Lee Zeldin, who is running for N.Y. governor, tweeted on Friday.

"Now, what they're doing with this action today up in Albany is targeting the law-abiding New Yorker," Zeldin said during an interview with Fox News. "I don't think they're making New York more safe; they're making New York less safe. They're creating these locations as targets because now, as a criminal, if you wanted to carry out one of your acts of targeting someone with an illegal firearm, you know that you're likely to encounter less resistance because the only people who care about these laws passed today are the law-abiding citizens.”

"Only under the insanity of New York Democrats can you get out of jail free for possessing an illegal firearm," said State GOP party chairman Nick Langworthy, "but be targeted by the government for being a law-abiding citizen exercising your constitutional rights."

Boropark24 spoke with Tzvi Waldman, founder of NYS Jewish Gun Club regarding the new anti-gun bill. “What the democrats are proposing definitely flies against what the Supreme Court ruled,” Waldman says. “The left is throwing a temper tantrum. Their ideology and their emotion completely supersede their logic. The new law is going to get overturned. But for now, it shows how Albany politics work - there’s one party and one rule there. They pushed through the law in 12 hours without regard for the citizens they claim to represent. Their liberal policies have caused crime rates to skyrocket to where they are today, and yet they still think one more law will fix the problem as if it wasn’t their laws that caused the problem in the first place. And the laws that the state passed will definitely be overturned.

“In a greater sense the Supreme Court ruling is a reminder of how thankful we have to be to live in the country,” says Waldman. “As long as we can bear arms, we will never be marched to the gas chambers again.
