The legendary amusement park on Coney Island, which has brought so much joy to Boro Park children and adults alike, turns 120 years old on Wednesday.
The park opened in the summer of 1903 near Surf and Neptune Avenues in Coney Island, and replaced an earlier park called the Sea Lion Park. It was the second of the three original, very large, iconic parks built on Coney Island. The others were Steeplechase Park (1897) and Dreamland (1904).
Between about 1880 and World War II, Coney Island was the largest amusement area in the United States, attracting several million visitors per year.
Some of the rides, shows, and exhibitions—such as “A Trip to the Moon”— featured at Luna Park, were world-famous, and were a great attraction to visitors over the decades, continually bringing joy and fun to people of all ages for one hundred and twenty years.
