"In It to Win It": Cuomo Remains In NYC Mayoral Race As Independent Candidate
By Idy Perl
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo is refusing to take no for an answer and announced today that he will remain in the NYC mayoral race for the November election as a third-party candidate after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary.
“The fight to save our city isn’t over,” Cuomo says in a video posted to social media. “Only 13% of New Yorkers voted in the primary. The general election is in November, and I am in it to win it.”
Mamdani replied to the post on X, formerly Twitter, with a link to his campaign donation page.
During an event this morning in Boro Park, before Cuomo’s announcement, Mayor Adams criticized Cuomo in response to questions about the possibility of Cuomo remaining in the race.
“Andrew is a double-digit loser in the primary. He lost by 12 points. He had his opportunity. He spent $25 million to get his message out. New York has heard it. He did not sell it.”
Reporters asked Adams about Cuomo’s latest proposal to allow whoever polls highest before the November elections to run against Mamdani, a move that Adams is against.
“Remember, polls showed him up 40 points, 40 points. The day before the primary, his spokesperson put out the results of a poll that said he was up 10 points. He lost by 12 points,” Adams said. “So if we're going to use methods of making this determination that they have already proven inaccurate, why are we going to put the risk of New Yorkers by someone who has not kept his word, who has a consistent record of not keeping his word? Why are we going to trust him now?
"…he will keep moving the goalposts as much as possible. This is just who he is. He can't help himself. Don't get angry with him. He just can't help himself. Trust me. I served with him in Albany. I watched what he did when he stepped down. He just can't help himself and you can't trust him at his word.”
