IN TRIBUTE: Rebbetzin Esther Paller, a”h

This morning, the Torah world lost a true bas kedoshim and eishes chaver with the passing of Rebbetzin Paller, the daughter of Rav Shmuel Ehrenfeld, Mattesdorder Rov, and the Rebbetzin of Rav Binyomin Paller, zt”l, Rosh Yeshivas Mekor Chaim in Boro Park for decades. 

For decades, Rebbetzin Esther Paller, a”h, stood at the side of her husband, HaGaon Rav Binyomin Paller, zt”l, the longtime Rosh Yeshivah of Mekor Chaim in Boro Park. Rav Binyomin was a towering talmid chacham who devoted his life to building the yeshivah and raising generations of talmidei chachamim. Rebbetzin Paller, the daughter of the revered Mattersdorfer Rav, Rav Shmuel Ehrenfeld, was an integral part of that world. 

Those who knew her speak first of her smile. Rebbetzin Paller was always smiling, always personable and always ready to give a talmid a few moments of her time. She would ask about a talmid's wife and children, remember what was happening in his life and take the time to speak with him whenever she encountered him. For someone who had been surrounded by generations of talmidim, this was no small feat. One talmid who knew her during the last twenty years reflected that he was only one of perhaps a thousand talmidim she had known over the years. Yet every time she saw him, she made time for him. He never felt like just another face passing through the yeshivah.

That warmth was her legacy. It was reflected in the smile she gave so freely, in the questions she asked, in her devotion to the yeshivah and in the genuine interest she showed in the families of its talmidim. And for the many people who had the privilege of knowing her, the memory of Rebbetzin Esther Paller will remain inseparable from that simple but extraordinary gift: she made you feel seen.

There was something remarkable, too, about how fully engaged she remained as the years passed. Even toward the very end of her life, she was sharp, attentive and involved. A talmid recalls seeing her at a wedding only two or three months ago. The Rebbetzin he encountered there was still unmistakably herself—alert, personable and interested in the people around her. It was another reminder of the remarkable vitality with which she had approached life for so many years.

With her passing, we have lost a strong and holy link to the past. The Rebbetzin leaves behind distinguished children who continue the family’s legacy of Torah.
