Major Bike Lane Project Proposed Along Green-Wood Cemetery in Boro Park

A major new bike lane project has been proposed along the southern border of Green-Wood Cemetery, with plans calling for safer streets, wider sidewalks, and a new entrance connecting the cemetery more directly to the Sunset Park neighborhood.  

The proposal would create a two-way protected bike lane along parts of Fort Hamilton Parkway, 36th Street, and 37th Street near the cemetery. The project would replace sections currently filled with truck parking, illegal dumping, and damaged sidewalks with new bicycle paths, pedestrian space, benches, and landscaping.  

Officials behind the project say the area has become dangerous and difficult for both pedestrians and cyclists, especially delivery workers who frequently use the route. According to data presented with the proposal, nearly 100 crashes have been reported in the area over the past five years, resulting in more than 120 injuries and several deaths.  

The plan also includes a brand-new entrance to Green-Wood Cemetery at Ninth Avenue and 37th Street. Cemetery officials say the new access point would make it easier for Sunset Park residents to enter the historic cemetery without needing to walk long distances around the property to existing gates.  

The project was recently presented to Brooklyn Community Board 7 and is estimated to cost about $15 million. Green-Wood officials are asking the city to provide initial funding to begin the design and community planning process.
