A man was pulled from the Upper Bay near 1st Avenue and 57th Street late Sunday night after a search lasting more than an hour.

The NYPD and FDNY responded to the scene shortly after reports came in that an individual had fallen into the water. Multiple NYPD boats and divers searched the area while officers scoured the shoreline and nearby bushes with flashlights.

The man was found close to the wall where he was believed to have fallen. Emergency crews pulled him from the water and began performing life-saving measures on the pier before he was taken to Maimonides Medical Center.

His condition remained unknown, though emergency personnel described his chances of survival as “extremely rare.”

A friend who had been with him at the time of the incident and called 911 was seen at the scene wrapped in a blanket provided by EMS as officers continued to investigate.
