Mayor Adams Issues Public Safety Announcements
By Y.M. Lowy
With both high temps and more heavy rain expected, Mayor Eric Adams delivered a public safety update urging New Yorkers to take precautions.
City emergency crews have activated the flash flood plan and are monitoring conditions across all five boroughs, ready to respond to downed trees, power lines, and road hazards.
Mayor Adams stressed the importance of readiness, saying the goal is to build muscle memory so New Yorkers know how to respond when extreme weather hits. He encouraged residents to stay hydrated, avoid extended time outdoors, and visit cooling centers if needed.
The mayor also urged the public to ease the load on the power grid by limiting electricity use during peak hours. The extreme heat placed a serious strain on the system this summer.
He addressed hydrant misuse as well, noting that open hydrants can waste up to 1,000 gallons per minute and reduce water pressure needed to fight fires. Adults can request spray caps at local firehouses, which limit the flow to just 25 gallons per minute.
New Yorkers are reminded to avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, and to check in on older neighbors or anyone who may need extra help.
