Mayor Adams Launches $218 Million Flood Protection Project in Red Hook
By Y.M. Lowy
Mayor Eric Adams has officially launched the Red Hook Coastal Resiliency project, a $218 million effort to protect the waterfront neighborhood from future flooding and rising sea levels.
The project will create a two-mile system of floodwalls, deployable gates, raised streets, and upgraded sewers, forming a continuous line of defense along some of Red Hook’s most flood-prone areas. The work is designed to reduce risks from storm surges and help safeguard homes, businesses, and infrastructure from costly storm damage.
In addition to flood protection, the plan includes improvements to public spaces such as parks, bike lanes, and pedestrian pathways, with new trees and landscaping to enhance the neighborhood.
Construction is now underway and is expected to be completed by 2028, giving Red Hook long-term protection against the growing threats of extreme weather and climate change.
