Mayor Eric Adams Hosted the Jewish Heritage Reception at City Hall

Mayor Eric Adams hosted a Jewish Heritage Reception at City Hall, with Moshe Davis, Executive Director of the new Mayor’s Office to Combat Antisemitism, serving as MC.

He addressed the rise in antisemitism, saying it has increased slowly over time while many have stayed silent. He compared it to a pot of water heating up gradually, warning that it has now reached a dangerous point and must be taken seriously.

New York City, he noted, has the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, and it is the city’s responsibility to ensure that Jewish New Yorkers can live openly and safely.

In response to growing fears within the community, Mayor Adams said he has heard from many who are thinking about leaving New York. He urged them to stay, saying this is not a time to run but a time to remain and stand together. He also spoke about New York as a city where people of all backgrounds should feel safe. No one should be targeted for wearing a yarmulke, a hijab, or a turban, and everyone should feel secure in their neighborhoods.

Four honorees were recognized at the event: Joe Shamie, a leader in the Syrian Jewish community; Victoria Zakayav, known for her community work; Chessed 24/7, a chessed organization; and Douglas Murray, a writer and commentator who advocates for Jewish causes.

The event concluded with acknowledgments and appreciation for the honorees and the ongoing contributions of the community.
