Mobil Gas Station Named as Suspected Source of Gasoline Smell

By Y.M. Lowy

Residents who noticed a strong gasoline smell around South Brooklyn in recent weeks may be interested in a new development in the investigation. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has identified a Mobil gas station at Coney Island and Guider Avenues as a suspected source of the odor.

The DEC found a leak in the station’s underground tank system and stopped it. The agency has since inspected the site and is continuing recovery and cleanup work.

On October 30, the DEC issued the property owner a notice of violation. The alleged violations include failing to report and investigate suspected leaks, provide records on time, and take required steps to empty the tank system and contain a spill.

The agency cautioned that it cannot confirm the station was the main or only source of the odor. It will continue inspecting other facilities in the area, and the smell may persist while the investigation and cleanup work continue.

Anyone who notices a strong gasoline smell is urged to call 911 and report it.
