Mounted NYPD Officers Save Child From Would-Be Catastrophe on 13th Avenue

About two weeks ago, a father took his special-needs son to purchase arts-and-crafts supplies near 13th Avenue and 40th Street. He parked the car, and the doors automatically unlocked, and the boy ran out of the car and took off running.

The father ran after the boy, who only seemed to run faster headlong into the 13th Avenue traffic, when suddenly, two NYPD mounted police— Police Officer Thomas Schmeltzer and Detective Amy Suarez— swooped in like angels and blocked the boy from running any further, enabling his father to grab him off the street.

On Sunday, the family came to the NYPD horse depot to express their deep appreciation to the officers for saving their son. But, selfless public servants that they are, they were reluctant to accept it, reported the AMNY.

“We don’t need recognition,” Suarez said. “I’m just happy that we were able to help out the family and put a smile on their face because, you know, things could always be worse.”

The mounted police on the horses were around Boro Park due to the uptick of antisemitism but they got to save a precious life in the meantime.
