New Psychiatric ER Opens at Maimonides
By Y.M. Lowy
10th Avenue outside Maimonides was blocked off today as the hospital celebrated a major addition to its emergency services. A brand new psychiatric emergency room is now open, giving patients in crisis a separate and specialized space for care.
The new unit is part of what will soon become the hospital’s full Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program. Unlike the general ER, this space is built specifically for behavioral health, offering a quieter and more focused setting with trained staff on hand.
The project was made possible through a six million dollar grant from the New York State Office of Mental Health. It’s one of several initiatives under Governor Kathy Hochul’s statewide push to expand mental health services.
