New Underground Power Line in Gowanus Almost Complete
By Y.M. Lowy
Con Edison is nearing the completion of a new underground transmission line that aims to enhance power reliability throughout Brooklyn, just in time for the summer season.
This new line stretches one mile from the Gowanus to the Greenwood substations and can simultaneously power 300,000 window air conditioners, 400,000 refrigerators, or 250,000 toaster ovens. This is important as more people use electric heating and charge electric vehicles.
The project costs $505 million and is part of Con Edison’s plan to meet the growing electricity demand. A similar line is being built on Staten Island, but Brooklyn’s line will be the first to become operational, expected to be fully functional this summer.
