New York City Gets New Area Code

By Y.M. Lowy
New phone numbers won’t begin with the familiar 718, 347, 917, and 929… soon they’ll be replaced by the fresh and new 465. That’s right, from Brooklyn to the Bronx, Queens to Staten Island, your calls will soon start with a whole new number.
The New York State Public Service Commission has announced that by the end of 2026, the classic area codes will be retired as they’re expected to run out of available numbers. In their place, the 465 area code will begin rolling out for all new numbers, ensuring the city can keep up with its growing population and tech needs.
The older codes will still be in service for a while, but before you know it, 465 will be the new number everyone’s dialing.
