New York City Taking New Actions to Contain Bird Flu

By Y.M. Lowy

New York City is taking action to stop the spread of H5N1 bird flu after cases were found in local birds. Health officials are working to keep people safe, especially in areas with live bird markets.

Key measures include temporarily closing affected live bird markets for cleaning and disinfection, with closures lasting 3 to 5 days. Markets without infected birds must sell their stock to minimize risk. The state is also testing dead birds in public parks.

To protect workers, free testing and antiviral treatments like Tamiflu are being offered. Workers should monitor for symptoms such as fever or cough for up to 10 days after exposure. Health experts advise wearing protective gear and washing hands often to avoid infection. People should avoid eating or drinking in bird-handling areas and stay away from contaminated surfaces.

At home, people are reminded to cook poultry to 165°F, and avoid raw milk products.

New Yorkers are urged to report sick or dead birds to the appropriate authorities. These steps are part of the city’s effort to protect public health and contain the virus.
